How does this differ from Text Input?
Text Input is single-line, Message is multi-line. Both share the same validation and order-attribute behaviour.

Can the message hide prices on the packing slip?
Yes — enable the gift mode option on the field. Prices are suppressed from the packing slip for that order.

Is there a character limit?
Up to 500 characters. Set a lower max if you need to.
