Shopify ships a great checkout. Five years ago, when checkout.liquid was deprecated and Checkout Extensibility was announced, most of us were nervous. The migration was painful. The result was worth it: a faster, safer, more standardized checkout. But it's incomplete. Here's what it ships and what it doesn't, as of February 2026.
What ships
Email field. Shipping address fields (locale-aware). Phone field. Discount code field. Payment method selection (Shopify Payments, Shop Pay, accelerated checkouts, third-party gateways). Order summary panel. Confirmation flow. Mobile-first responsive. Fraud detection. Shop Pay accelerated checkout. Multi-currency via Shopify Markets. Multi-language via Shopify Markets.
What doesn't ship
Trust badges. Payment-icon row. Review embeds (TrustPilot, Google, Yotpo). Verified-buyer review highlights. Custom field types beyond text/checkbox/dropdown (no phone, no date, no file upload). Conditional field visibility. Address validation API. Gift card validation API. Hide payment methods conditionally. Custom checkout rules (post-Scripts). Pre-built templates. Free-shipping progress bars. Discount-code surfacing. At-checkout upsells. Order bumps. Shipping protection. Customs/duties messaging. Holiday cut-off banners. Sustainability badges. Block-level translation (only store-level via Markets). A/B test instrumentation. Per-merchant cart-condition rules. Multi-language per-block overrides.
Why the gap?
Shopify ships a foundation. The customization layer on top is intentionally an ecosystem — Checkout Extensibility is built for third-party apps like ours to render alongside the native form. Shopify doesn't need to ship every possible block; they ship the runtime and let merchants pick from the marketplace.
The pragmatic question
Should Shopify ship Trust Badges native? Maybe. Address validation? Probably yes (and they're rumored to be working on it for a future release). Block-level multilingual? Eventually. But the realistic timeline for any of these is 18-36 months. If you're missing the lift today, the practical answer is: install a checkout app, configure the blocks, ship the lift this quarter.
We've retired blocks before when Shopify shipped equivalent native features — we retired our Discount Field block in 2024 when Shopify shipped a comparable native version. We'll keep doing that. Shopify shipping things that overlap with us is a signal that we picked the right problems.
