Create a block from a template

In short

Go to Checkout Blocks, click Create New Block and pick a template with Use Template, or click Start Fresh for an empty block. The template fills in the name and block types with sample content. Replace the sample content, add more block types with Add block, and click Save to get a Block ID.

✓ Applies to

  • Advanced and Deluxe plans
  • New blocks, and existing blocks through Browse Templates

✕ Doesn't apply to

  • Checkout rules. Rules are created under Rules, not from block templates
  • Checkout branding templates, which live under Branding

Before you start

  • Choose a plan or start the trial from Billing. Some block types are only in higher plans. See plans and features.
  • Have your real content ready: product names, discount codes, review text or image URLs. Templates ship with sample content that you need to replace.

Steps

Pick a template or start fresh

  1. In Checkout Ninja, go to Blocks and click Create New Block (or Create Your First Block if you have none yet).
  2. On Select a template, narrow the list with the category menu or the search box. Click a template’s image to see a larger preview.
  3. Click Use Template on the one you want. The app opens a new block with the template applied and shows “Template applied successfully”.
    • Or click Start Fresh (“Select and add blocks of your choice”) to open an empty block. The Start Fresh tile only shows while no category or search filter is set.

Replace the sample content

  1. Check the Block Name. A template fills it with the template’s name. It must be 3 to 100 characters and only you see it.
  2. In the builder, click each block type to open its settings. Replace the sample text, codes, products and links with your own, then click Done.
i

Templates contain placeholder content, for example sample discount codes. Anything you don’t replace shows to buyers exactly as written.

Add more block types

A saved block is a container. It can hold several block types that show together in the same place in checkout, for example a heading, trust badges and a payment icon row.

  1. Click Add block (or Add your first block in an empty block). The Choose block list opens. Search by category or block name.
  2. Pick a block type. Its settings open straight away. Fill them in and click Done.
  3. Repeat for each block type you want. Drag block types to reorder them. The order in the builder is the order in checkout.
  4. To keep a block type in the block but stop it showing, use its visibility toggle. Its badge changes from Active to Inactive.

Save

  1. Leave Status set to Active.
  2. Click Save in the save bar. The Block ID appears under Block Details.
  3. Place the block: add it to the checkout editor.

Verify it worked

  1. The Checkout preview card under the builder shows all your block types in order. It’s approximate: your checkout branding sets the final look.
  2. After placing the Block ID, open your checkout. Every block type marked Active shows, and none marked Inactive does.
  3. Look for leftover sample content, such as template discount codes or review names.

Limitations

  • Applying a template replaces the whole form, including the block types you already added.
  • The preview is approximate. Buyers see your block in your store’s checkout theme.
  • Visibility conditions apply to the whole block, not to single block types inside it. To show different block types to different buyers, make separate blocks. See visibility conditions.

Troubleshooting

Clicking a block type opens “Upgrade The Plan”. That block type isn’t in your plan, so its settings are locked. Upgrade from Billing, or delete that block type. More on plan locks.

A block type shows in the builder but not in checkout. Check its badge. Inactive block types don’t render. Also check its required settings: many block types hide themselves when empty, for example an image with no image source or an upsell with no product.

I can’t find Start Fresh. Clear the search box and set the category back to All. The tile hides while you filter.

Frequently asked

Does a template go live on its own? +

No. A template only fills in the block form. You still have to save the block and place its Block ID in the checkout editor.

Can I apply a template to a block I already made? +

Yes. Open the block and click Browse Templates. Applying a template replaces what's in the form, so if you have unsaved changes the app asks you to keep or discard them first.

Can one block mix different block types? +

Yes. Use Add block to combine any block types, for example a heading, an upsell and trust badges. They render together, in the order shown in the builder.

Why does a template open an Upgrade The Plan window? +

The template uses a block type that isn't included in your plan. Its settings stay locked until you upgrade. You can delete that block type and keep the rest.
