Step Indicator not showing in checkout

In short

The Step Indicator only appears on three-page checkout. On one-page checkout there are no separate steps, so the block hides itself. In Shopify's checkout editor, open Settings, go to Checkout layout, choose Three-page checkout and save.

✓ Applies to

  • The Step Indicator block
  • Shopify Plus checkout

✕ Doesn't apply to

  • Other blocks that don't show. Use the general block checklist
Want to keep one-page checkout? Use a Progress Bar or Heading block instead →

The Step Indicator reads the list of checkout steps from Shopify. If there are fewer than two steps, it renders nothing. There’s no error, so a hidden block looks like a missing one.

Your checkout uses one-page layout

This is the cause in almost every case. One-page checkout puts contact, delivery and payment on a single page, so Shopify reports no separate steps to count.

How to check: open Shopify’s checkout editor. Click the gear icon at the top left to open Settings and scroll to Checkout layout. If One-page checkout is selected, this is the cause.

Fix:

  1. In Checkout layout, choose Three-page checkout.
  2. Click Save.
  3. Reload your checkout. The block shows “Step 1 of 3” on the first step.
i

The block’s settings in Checkout Ninja show the same reminder: Requires a three-page checkout.

The block is placed where it only shows on some steps

The Custom Block positions before and after the delivery address only exist on the step that has the delivery address. A Step Indicator placed there doesn’t appear on the other steps.

How to check: in the checkout editor, find the Custom Block with your Block ID and note its position.

Fix: move it, or add another Custom Block, in the position after the header, so it appears on every step. All placements.

The block isn’t live

If switching layout didn’t help, the problem is the block itself rather than the steps.

How to check:

  • In Checkout Ninja, the block’s Status is Active and it’s saved.
  • In the checkout editor, the Custom Block has the right Block ID and doesn’t show Block not found.
  • Any visibility conditions on the checkout block match your test cart.
  • Your store is on Shopify Plus, or it’s a development store. Other plans can’t show app blocks in the checkout steps.

Fix: work through the general block checklist.

Frequently asked

Can the Step Indicator work on one-page checkout? +

No. One-page checkout has a single page with no separate steps, so there's nothing to count. The block stays hidden by design.

Where do I change the checkout layout? +

In Shopify's checkout editor, click the gear icon at the top left to open Settings, scroll to Checkout layout, choose Three-page checkout, and save.

Will switching layout affect my other blocks? +

Your Checkout Ninja blocks stay where you placed them. Check each one in the editor preview after switching, because the page is split into three steps.
